Understanding Zakat: The Pillar of Purification and Growth in Islam

In Islam, the Five Pillars form the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and practice. Among these pillars is Zakat, an obligatory act of charity that holds profound significance.

The term ‘Zakat’, which translates to purification, growth, and blessing, reflects the belief that giving in charity purifies one’s wealth and promotes its growth. It symbolises the concept of trimming a plant to promote healthier growth.

Zakat donations are intended to help the poor and vulnerable. There are eight categories of people eligible to receive Zakat:

  1. Al Fuqara – The poor
  2. Al-Masakin – The needy
  3. Zakat collectors
  4. New Muslims and those in need
  5. Those held captive or enslaved
  6. Those in debt
  7. Those striving in the path of Allah
  8. Wayfarers (travellers)

Your Zakat donation has the power to save lives, transform communities, and lift people out of poverty. At Deen Trust International, your Zakat donations contribute to various projects providing clean water, education, food, orphan care, Qur’an memorisation support, and safe homes for vulnerable individuals.

Calculating Your Zakat

Zakat is obligatory for every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth above a specific amount known as the Nisab. This threshold changes year to year due to economic fluctuations but is generally equivalent to 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver in cash or bank accounts. Personal home, furniture, cars, food, and clothing do not contribute to the Nisab.

Where to Give Your Zakat

Once you’ve calculated your Zakat, you can choose from various projects at Deen Trust International to donate to. Whether it’s sponsoring an orphan, contributing to safe water projects, or supporting education, your Zakat can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.
